The
Fortress on Murphy Canyon Road - this is the Chargers' training
facility, since 1997. Located one mile north of the Murph, this
is where the battle plans are prepared and the plays are perfected.
The Fortress is a state-of-the-art facility, complete with two full-size
grass fields and one artificial turf field. This place has everything,
including rooms for team meetings by position groups, weight room,
training room, equipment room, video production facilities, locker
room, office space for coaches/management and a conference room.
The Chargers also have complete sets of NFL team jerseys, with the
numbers of key opposing players, for use by the scout team during
practices.
The
Fortress is used year-round. Off-season training and mini-camps
are held here. Prior to 1997, the Chargers' training facilities
were located at the Murph. Training camp is held at the University
of California, San Diego.
The
Chargers' championship trophies are on display at the Fortress,
including the 1963 AFL trophy and 1994 AFC Lamar Hunt trophy. There
is also a 1996 American Bowl trophy for a preseason win over the
Steelers in Tokyo, Japan. But there is still plenty of room for
many Vince Lombardi Super Bowl trophies - some day!
Everything
at the Fortress is impressive, but its treasure are the pictures
that adorn the hallways. This is the equivalent of a pictorial Charger
hall of fame. All of the Charger greats, past and present, are suspended
here at their best in a never ending game against every NFL opponent.
You can see and feel the passion of every Charger generation. Coach
Gillman is here with his players. Alworth is making catches. Fouts
is directing passes. JJ is making graceful finger-tip catches. Gary
Anderson is airborne for a touchdown. Boss Ross is commanding the
sideline. Seau is being Seau. They are all still here - on grass,
on turf, at home, away, in sunshine, in rain and in snow!
This
hall of fame is a Charger fan's dream world, and Bolt Pride is part
of it. Yes, Alvarez, MagWell and Valdivia are enshrined here in
the Chargers' Power Corps. There are only a few classic pictures
of Charger fans at the Fortress, and Bolt Pride is honored to be
a part of this ultimate Charger party!
Sincere
thanks to Rex Lilly of the San Diego Chargers for these special
memories.
